Places to Stay, Eat, and Things to Do

Places to stay

Shadyside Inn – This is a centrally-located option, where the "rooms" are full apartments with hotel services. A good choice for families intending to stay the week who are interested in walking or busing.

The Wyndham University of Pittsburgh – A well-priced hotel located in the heart of Oakland, and right on the buslines.

The Mansions on Fifth – An upscale boutique hotel, located within walking distance to CMU, Shadyside and East Liberty.

Morning Glory Inn – Located on the Southside, away from some of our festivities, but next to the very lively East Carson St.! Romantic B&B.

Ace Hotel – This is a very cool hotel, with a wonderful restaurant downstairs. The vibe is very modern and hipstery, and the hotel itself is a refurbished and converted YMCA! Located in the neighborhood of East Liberty, a personal favorite.

Hotel Indigo – Located in East Liberty, this is a convenient and very nice place to stay. We've heard only good things, and it is incredibly close to Zeke's Coffee Shop.

Air BnB – Air BnB is a safe, reliable way to stay in Pittsburgh during your stay. We are willing to help you coordinate with other guests to rent out an entire home or apartment to mitigate costs; please go to this google doc to coordinate with others and have a great stay with other friends! You will want to stay in the East End locations of Pittsburgh.

Our favorite restaurants

Biddle's Cafe – A fantastic and fun coffee place, this cafe is close to Emily and Vince's first apartment. Has a variety of drinks, as well as light eats.

Enrico's – Nestled in the Strip District, Enrico's is the restaurant arm of the distinctly Pittsburgh biscotti company. Lunch is wonderful, and the atmosphere is homey.

Muddy Waters – A Cajun Oyster Bar, with live music every Tuesday and Friday night. Be sure to make a reservation!

Morcilla – Traditional Spanish tapas with some newer takes on flavor profiles; excellent charcuterie and in the very cool neighborhood of Lawrenceville. Reservations highly recommended.

Gaucho – Traditional Argentinian barbecue,  this place is so popular that the line wraps around the block. Not to worry, the line moves quickly! Please note, it is BYOB, but don't let this deter you: if you like beef, you need to go here.

Cafe 33– This place has fantastic, authentic Taiwanese food, and never disappoints. Vince's favorite is the house stir-fried rice cake, and Emily's is the three-cup chicken.

Harris Grill – Vast menu, fun environment, and family-friendly, this is a must when on Elsworth Ave.

Pamela's, Squirrel Hill location – Cash-only diner, with the best specialty hotcakes in the world (Obama's favorites, too! Officially!).

Kaya – This Caribbean-focused restaurant is delicious, and with cocktails half-off from 4 to 6 pm, it makes for a great late lunch or early dinner. Make sure to try their conch fritters!

Apteka – A vegan, locally-sourced restaurant with fresh ingredients, the atmosphere is very laid-back and neat. The menu is written on butcher paper on the wall, and changes seasonally; however, their stellar pierogies and cocktails never leave.

DATE NIGHTS

Butler Street in Lawrenceville – We cannot stress enough how much stuff there is to do on Butler St. We suggest using an afternoon and going to Espresso A Mano, Cafe B52 for lunch, all of the cool shops for your entertainment (trust us, they are entertaining), and ending up at maybe Morcilla, Cure, or Franktuary.

Manor Theater, Squirrel Hill – Independent movie theater with great choices, plush seats, and a cocktail bar you can order at before the main event!

Club Cafe – Live music most every night, with favorites such as Beauty Slap and Gaelynn Lea performing; tickets are usually between $10-15. Please note: most shows are 21+.

Hidden Harbor – In Emily's opinion, this is the best bar in Pittsburgh. The drinks are colorful, fun, and delicious, and it is right across the street from Cafe 33. Stop in after dinner for some of the best and most unique cocktails in the burgh!

Urban Tap– We have a strong beer culture in Pittsburgh, and Urban Tap is the best place to sample a ton of local and regional brews! From 4.30 to 6.30 pm, all drafts are 1/2 off, and with over 100 beers on tap, you will find something you like.

East Carson St Bar Crawl – Explore the longest Bar Crawl Street in America! Not exactly our scene, but there are cool bars here, and plenty of tattoo parlors.
